Norway to Send Troops, Aircraft, and Air Defense Systems to Poland

The situation in Ukraine is critical, and much of the material support for the country is being transported through Poland. In a few days, Norway will be sending a contribution consisting of soldiers, aircraft, and air defense systems to help protect the most important hub for the transport of civilian and military material support from other countries to Ukraine. In this way, Norway is helping to ensure that aid reaches Ukraine so that it can continue its fight for freedom, says Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.

Norway will contribute to maintaining the security situation around the Rzeszow airport in Poland, as part of NATO’s integrated air and missile defense. Norway is sending approximately 100 soldiers, NASAMS air defense systems, and F-35 fighter jets. The mission will take place from December to Easter and the force will operate within Polish airspace. Various NATO allies take turns in providing Poland with such protection against air threats.

“Poland is making a tremendous effort to ensure that both civilian and military material gets into Ukraine. The airport is also central to the medical evacuation that Norway is responsible for,” says Gram.

“The Russian warfare in Ukraine has shown the value of air defense, and the Norwegian contribution in Poland is highly valued. We are doing this primarily for Ukraine and Poland, but also to show that we stand by our commitments in NATO,” says Gram.

The Defense Minister emphasizes that Norway’s security concerns while the mission in Poland is carried out have been carefully considered. National preparedness and operations are being maintained as normal.
